Spirit of Chartwell

The magnificent Spirit of Chartwell is a fantastic vessel, tasteful and elegant in just about every way. Built in 2000, this fine ship is designed in a classic 1930s style, with facilities, club rooms and cabin created with class, comfort and taste all in mind. Passengers can take in the distinct charm of the golden Douro river from the refined restaurant, the nostalgic club rooms or from the comfort of their own spacious stateroom. With excellent dining and drinking options available, and a warm and welcoming crew, this is simply the best way to discover this excellent corner of the world.

Used by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Spirit of Chartwell is fit for royalty. The barge has 14 classic double cabins to retire to after a day of soaking up the sun, along Portuguese waterways.  You can be entertained at the Saloon deck with its Somerset Maugham Piano Bar and George Bradshaw Restaurant and Lounge.

Facilities on board the Spirit of Chartwell are superb, and are perfect for you to make the most of your time on the ship. The George Bradshaw restaurant is charming, with large and wide windows for you to take in the views as you tuck in to some fine dining. Meanwhile, the Somerset Maugham Piano Bar is a fantastic venue from which you can kick back and enjoy a glass of port, or another tipple of your choice from the well-stocked bar. As its name suggests, there is also a baby grand piano here.

On the final top deck, the sun deck is available with a range of deck chairs for you to perhaps while away the night in the company of your fellow passengers.


Dining takes place in the George Bradshaw Restaurant which is split up into separate booths for a more intimate dining experience. There are also larger, 8-person tables for a more social meal. All of these are served by an excellent dining staff who are happy to answer any questions or assist with any dining requirements you may have. Enjoy the sublime scenery through panoramic windows as you enjoy classic Portuguese and international dishes, created with local ingredients brought on at each stop.



The cabins on board the Spirit of Chartwell are split into 14 staterooms and one Royal Suite. Each cabin is spacious, comfortable and tastefully furnished, with windows from which you can see the river drift lazily by. Each room has a television, a trouser press and individual air-conditioning as well as an en-suite bathroom. An interesting touch are the light fittings, all of which come from the original SS France, one of the longest cruise ships in maritime history.

Royal Suite - Saloon Deck

The Royal Suite can be found in an elevated position on the Saloon Deck, in easy reach of the bar and the restaurant. With large windows, more space and a large double bed, the Royal Suite is the finest cabin on board the Spirit of Chartwell.

Stateroom - Stateroom Deck

The staterooms of the Spirit of Chartwell are elegant and spacious, with either twin beds or a double bed depending on your preference. Tasteful hardwood finishing makes up the interior décor, while amenities include a television, a hairdryer and air-conditioning.
