Low Deposit £50pp
From mysterious citadels and Roman remains to fantastical red rice and white horses, experience France's southern way of life with its unique and unusual allurements and marvel at Carcassonne's walled 'cité'.
After meeting at our St Pancras Departure Office, board the Eurostar to Paris then continue by rail to the town Nîmes for six nights at the Ibis Styles Nîmes Centre Gare.
Nestled charmingly amongst the foothills of the Cevennes, Nîmes boasts one of the richest collections of classical buildings in France. The city grew as an important crossroads in the ancient world and quickly became one of the most prominent towns in Gaul. Your guided tour begins at the re-purposed Roman Amphitheatre, continuing around Nîmes' historical centre and passing by La Maison Carree, an ancient Roman Temple whose facade was inspired by its counterparts in Rome, Apollo and Mars Ultor.
Your excursion today is to the striking walled cité of Carcassonne. Here there's an included tour that visits impressive Château Comtal. Following lunch at a local restaurant, you have some free time to explore before returning to Nîmes, perhaps experience the towering Basilica of St Nazaire, modelled after St Denis cathedral in Paris.
Enjoy some free time on Day 4 to perhaps visit the Pont du Gard or take the train to nearby Montpellier. On Day 5 there's a full-day excursion by rail to Avignon, where you can sightsee independently. One attraction not to miss is the impressive Palais des Papes.
Enjoy a morning visit to the Camargue, home to 140,000 hectares of natural wetlands and showcasing an array of different wildlife. This is a paradise for nature lovers, playing host to wild white horses and even the odd flamingo. Additionally this region boasts some unusual paddy fields which produce red rice - a fascinating sight.
Depart Nîmes for Paris to connect with the Eurostar service back to St Pancras in London.
